Last week, VisitScotland launched its latest TV and cinema advert, the most visible face of our Surprise Yourself campaign for the UK & Ireland market, to mark the start of the Year of Creative Scotland 2012.

VisitScotland’s latest TV and cinema ad features Pittenween Arts Festival in Fife as one of the many creative events happening in Scotland across the year. This year’s campaign will continue to focus on the country’s surprising twists on familiar backdrops while also showcasing its well-known culture and creativity.

Voiced by Scottish television historian Neil Oliver, the new advert will be shown on television and in cinemas todayuntil the middle of March and is part of a campaign which will see the spotlight on the Year of Creative Scotland throughout 2012, to encourage potential visitors from within the UK to take a trip to Scotland.

Using well-loved Scottish icons, the current VisitScotland Surprise Yourself adverts, first broadcast in March 2011, aimed at reminding people about what a break in the country offers, whilst challenging possible stereotypes.

The Surprise Yourself campaign has generated an additional economic benefit for Scotland of £90 million since it launched, the best ever results for a VisitScotland domestic campaign. The adverts have been extremely well received, with a survey revealing that 70 per cent of people found the adverts more emotionally engaging than previous VisitScotland campaigns.

The new advert was Unveiled at Edinburgh Castle last week (Wednesday 11 January) by Fiona Hyslop MSP, Cabinet Secretary for Culture and External Affairs. Since then it has received coverage in The Scotsman, The Herald, the Daily Express, the Courier & Advertiser, the Evening News, the Metro and the Daily Record. It also appeared on the BBC Scotland news and Newsnight Scotland.

Following the announcement at the end of last year of major changes to the Scottish Thistle Awards, I wanted to remind you that the regional awards are open for entry - please let any businesses you think would be interested know.

The changes include a new regional format, will help to recognise tourism excellence across the country and will deliver a year-round programme of industry-facing activity as well as revamping the final event format.

A programme of four localised Scottish Thistle Awards celebrations will take place between April and May 2012. These events will see local tourism businesses compete in 12 categories, winning the chance to move forward to the main national event in November 2012.

The four regional award areas will be: Highland and Islands, North East, South/Central East, South/Central West with the winners of each progressing to represent the region at the final awards ceremony.
